The R.I.S.E. Reading initiative

Every child can

alter these figures.

Roughly 30–40%

of U.S. fourth graders cannot read at their grade level, and roughly two-thirds read at or below the “basic” proficiency level.

National Data

Approximately 71%

of 4th graders in Philadelphia are not reading at grade level.

Reading Proficiency by 4th grade

is the most important predictor of high school, graduation and career success confirmed by many studies.

Less than 55%

of children age three to five are read to daily by a family member. Children in families with incomes below the poverty line are less likely to be read
to everyday than children in families with incomes of at or above the poverty line.

Where parental involvement is low

he classroom average reading score is 40-45% below the national average. Where involvement is high, classroom score is 20-25% above the national average taking into consideration variables such as communities, schools, principals, teachers, class sizes and the psycho-social state of the students.
